All About Perimenopause. How do you know if you’re in it?

What is perimenopause and how do I know if I’m in it?

  • Perimenopause is the hormonal transition leading up to menopause. It was thought to last on average ~4-5 years, however recent studies show that it can actually be anywhere from 1-10 years prior to menopause (or the last menstrual cycle). Since typical menopause age ranges from 45-58, for some people perimenopause can start as early as mid thirties.

If I can get perimenopause in my 30’s how could this affect my postpartum recovery?

  • Since perimenopause is characterized by increasing fluctuations in hormones, your peaks of your hormones could get higher and your lows of your hormones could get lower. It can sometimes be difficult to see the difference between postpartum recovery and perimenopause since symptoms will be similar.

  • There are some differences between the postpartum and perimenopause phases.  The postpartum period on average lasts around six months (for breastfeeding women, it can extend beyond this time frame After around 6 months your body will recalibrate your hormones to their pre-pregnancy levels. However, if after this period you still don’t feel 100% like yourself and/or are still experiencing some mental, physical and emotional symptoms like loss of libido, hair loss, mood swings, anxiety, or trouble sleeping it is possible that your levels of estrogen and progesterone are starting to fluctuate unpredictably indicating potential entrance into perimenopause..

Whether you’re dealing with postpartum symptoms or perimenopause symptoms or the overlapping complexities of both, it's important to remember you’re not alone. Knowledge is power and the key is to understand your body, listen to it and embrace the changes it's going through. Pelvic floor physical therapy can guide you through each or both of these life transitions helping you recover from birth and optimize your pelvic health for the future.
