What is dry needling?

Dr. Jenn dry needling service

Dr. Jenn dry needling the low back at Root to Rise in Scarborough

Dry needling is a safe and effective treatment modality performed by specialty trained clinicians. Thin stainless steel needles (filiform meaning no fluid is injected) are inserted into skin, muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia, around nerves, and around bone in order to address both muscle and connective tissue restrictions and decrease pain.

Dry needling helps reduce pain by communicating with local tissues mentioned as well as our central nervous system which can be very effective in “resetting” chronic pain patterns. Dry needling can be performed with or without electrical stimulation and the greatest outcomes in the literature reveal that dry needling is more effective with the electrical stimulation.

This modality has been proven to work best when combined with manual therapy and exercise and not as a stand alone treatment however, we are now offering stand alone 30 minute dry needling treatment visits for current therapy patients who are consistent with their exercise program and have an established plan of care!
